To you from Kenneth McArthur
Hey Reader ,
I told you yesterday, I can't remember the last time I've seen
so many problems at once.
Today is scatter brain day!
I'm trying to get things ready for two New York City Live
Events in July... It turns out those are only weeks away!
http://learningfolder.net/blog/?p=935
My hard drive is trying to transfer my backup data and
estimating 23 hours and 35 minutes to complete it.
I'm installing printers, software ... it will be a week long
job.
Not to mention everything that has to get done for Tobri and
then there's writing my new book
It seems like I'm all over the place ...
Focus is a good thing ... Don't you wish you had time to
focus on it?
Which brings up something off the wall that to be honest, I
just don't have time for ..
..
My first big success story was a site called Affiliate Showcase.
I developed the idea with one of the pioneers of the Internet,
Jim Daniels and it was powered by Portalcube which was a
portal system I developed to create powerful portal sites.
When Affiliate Showcase launched, it went straight into the
top 1,000 sites on the Internet and made a quarter-million
dollars of recurring revenue in the first six months.
For years, if it dropped below the top 2,000 sites on the
Internet, I felt bad. It was my solid cash-cow with over
60,000 members and steady recurring revenue every month.
And it was technically amazing, crammed with viral elements
that were years ahead of the industry .... in many ways a
marketing work of art.
It was built on a solid platform which I sold out of the box
for $30,000.00 per installation, plus custom programming
and installation costs, so it was really primed for success.
I kept adding more and more powerful features and soon...
Well ...
It was designed for people just starting out and they didn't
need any more new exciting features.
It already had everything they needed and customer support
was covered by about 20 basic questions. In short ...
It got a bit boring for me.
And there was lots of excitement going on!
I launched jvAlert to an Alexa rank of 362 out of all the
sites on the Internet. jvAlert Live started hopping,
Info Product Blueprint and eventually the amazing
Tobri startup.
So what happened to Affiliate Showcase?
Well, it's still there ...
It just got neglected.
A hacker took out some of our database and I didn't have
time to go and rebuild it. There was a small bug in the
signup process and I couldn't focus enough to get it fixed.
Or more accurately ... I WAS focused -- just on other things.
I should have brought in someone to focus on it, but there just
wasn't time and to be honest, you need to be someone special
to take on a project like that.
And I didn't really want to let it go.
Affiliate Showcase is a part of Internet history and it has a
special place in my heart.
But ...
It's a bit like dating a wonderful girl who you care about deeply.
A girl who is truly special who you enjoy being with.
If you know she's special, but you are focused on someone or
something else, then it's just not fair to tie her down.
The truth is I just don't have the time or focus to devote to
Affiliate Showcase with Tobri about to launch.
And before you suggest it ...
I don't have extra money to hire someone to polish her up and
get her back into amazing shape because every cent I have is
solidly bet on the Tobri launch.
In fact, I could use an influx of cash to add to the power and
splash of Tobri.
So here's the off-the-wall part ...
Maybe you have an interest in something truly special.
Affiliate Showcase is the most profitable site I've ever
created -- at least up until Tobri launches.
If you want a jewel in the rough - PROVEN profit model with
a solid platform to run it - this might work for you.
It won't sell it short, but it will be a solid investment for the
right person.
So why am I even mentioning this today on my scatterbrained
focus day?
Because, two separate people told me today they were trying
for TWO DAYS to sign up for executive memberships and were
hitting that little sign-up bug I was telling you about.
Imagine ... What would cause someone to try for two days
to sign up for a website.
Something is special about Affiliate Showcase, but it takes
someone special to love her and give her the attention I can't
give her now.
I'm not going to give her to just anyone ... she's too close to
my heart, but if you might be the person to love her, I'm
willing to listen, because she deserves someone who will
give her the attention she deserves.
Let me know what you think.
All the best,
Ken

That's the real reason why I did this by Tellman Konudson
Reader, do you ever look at your kids
and wonder what they're thinking?
Ever wonder how they see you? What they're
learning from your actions?
Looking back, will they remember you as someone
at the mercy of circumstances, who could never
seem to do what you wanted in life...
Or a 'master of your fate' who set an example
for them to live the life they want, too?
I never want my kid to think for one moment
that he doesn't have a choice to be the
captain of his own ship.
That's the real reason why I did this

Small Changes Will Equal Big Profits by M. Glanfield
How Small Changes Will Equal Big Profits
One Small Idea = 14% Increase in Revenue
Sometimes you come across one small idea that doesn’t take too much to implement but that makes a huge change.
I came across one of those last March (2010), and it immediately started making a huge difference in my revenue.
Whenever I make changes I’m happy enough to see a 1-5% increase in sales, but in this case I added close to 14% (13.7% to be exact) to my monthly revenue.
So what was the change?
Having a Daily Deal
Now, this wasn’t my idea. I don’t really care that is wasn’t as I don’t usually have unique ideas.
I got this idea from a friend of mine who runs a quilting website over at The Missouri Star Quilt Shop (yes, that’s right, quilting).
I saw that they were running a Daily Deal – basically one item would go on sale for a ridiculous amount for one day, and a new item would come up every day.
They even used a lot of their home page real estate to advertise I added the red arrow, so don’t think they did something that ugly on that pretty a site…
The owner of the store told me that people loved the Daily Deal, and even if they didn’t buy right away it kept them coming back every day to see what was the current deal.
And hey, if people keep coming back, they are MUCH more likely to purchase.
So I thought, “Hey, if he can do it, so can I!”
So here is what I did:
1. I decided that whatever the deal was I would not lose money on it, so the discount depended on my margins.
Basically I could do between 35% to 70% off depending on the items, and still make money. That way if people only buy the Daily Deal I still make money, although not as much as a normal purchase.
2. Since I’m inherently lazy, I even wrote a little program that would pick a new deal every day.
You don’t have to do this. It really is only about 10 minutes of work per day. Easily outsourced, or easily done if you are a one-person operation.
3. I created a “Daily Deal” newsletter, where people could sign up to get an email every day for the Daily Deal.
I made it crystal clear that they would get an email every day, so nobody has complained (yet).
4. I also have a little ad space on the side of my store and main pages that show the current daily deal.
Ok, so it isn’t that exciting, but it was sure worth a try.
13.7% increase in revenues…
So I checked back on it after a month and was completely surprised to see a HUGE spike in revenue.
(And yes, 13.7% increase is huge for an e-commerce site)
I was quite happy with it, and so refined it and continued.
It has already accounted for over $20,000 extra in revenue, just in the past few months, so I’m quite happy about it.
An important note…
Now, I know some of you will say “But that’s just revenue, not profits” and you’re right, it’s not a 13.7% increase in profits.
But keep the following points in mind
1. It’s an increase in revenue, not replacing what people would have bought.
2. I NEVER lose money on the Daily Deal, I only make money.
3. It’s much easier to get somebody to buy AGAIN that it is to get them to buy the first time, so this gets me more customers.
4. I’ve seen people talk about the Daily Deal on my forums and elsewhere, so it gets me free traffic and publicity.
5. All of the above reasons are awesome, especially for a change that took me one day to make.
I just emailed the owner of the quilting store to see if he has any other ideas, because hey, if it works half as well as this one, I’ll be one happy e-commerce site owner.
Enjoy!
